Tarot – The Reveurs
Grab your red coloured accessories, and join The Reveurs in the next Major Arcana of the deck.
I chose this subject for this Major Arcana card, because the reveurs are essential to the circus and its magic. The circus is a place where all of the reveurs go to escape the real world and surrender to the magic.
The Reveurs are a group of people who follow the circus from location to location. They are the “super fans” of the 1800s. The identify themselves through red coloured accents in their outfits. Once they are there they hand themselves over to the circus and all that it brings to their lives.
Tarot – Masquerade
The party has arrived, and it’s a masquerade!
I chose this subject for this card because the masquerade ball is full of all of the people who built and designed our circus. This event was a celebration of the anniversary, and no one was to be left out. The party encompasses all that they have accomplished and the potential for what is to come
Tarot – The Leather Book
The Page of Swords is the next card in the deck.
I chose this content for this card because Marco’s book is an essential piece to the story and the circus as a whole. Marco’s process involves gathering knowledge, and recording it in a way that he can use for future spells, learning, etc.

This is an early study in how to best handle colour in these cards.
The content on this card is inspired by a very early scene in our inspiration novel. Honestly, it’s a bit of a bummer, but it plays nicely into the tone of the card, and gave me an opportunity to play a little more with “environment” in each of these cards.

This card was inspired by the performances described as one moves through the circus from tent to tent. The snakes dance to the music and gradually change from white to ebony while under a starry sky.

This card was inspired by a very charismatic and troubling character in the book. There’s an incident in the book (I’ll try and avoid spoilers) where the character… shifts to a different state, let’s say. I knew that I had to use this element in the card to try and push the design along. Read more to see how this card came together…

I have had a project percolating for over a decade. I had the project fully ready and planned out, and then I stalled out when it was time to start executing it. I worried about style, I worried about the final plan, I worried about changing my plan part way through.
It turns out that my style just wasn’t ready yet. Late last year I did a little digging back into the idea to see if it was worth pursuing or if I should just toss it. A few sketches, and Firefly exports later I was off and running again. OF COURSE the style I had been working in recent years would be PERFECT for this project. It was sitting right there!
Anyway, all that to say that this is the start of that project… I give you the Night Circus inspired Tarot Deck!
