Painting in the Sunshine

Painting in the Sunshine

While on my social media adventures a couple weeks back, I saw a video that inspired me. It was a really fun painting style that I knew I could recreate with the supplies I had. In the coming days I was going to be seeing some family, so we opted to do this together that weekend!

This turned out to be so much fun. I brought as many different supplies as I thought we could potentially need and we ran the experiment.

Bimg_4969asically you’re creating a stencil with masking tape. You’ll want to be sure that the tape is sticky enough to prevent bleeding, but not so sticky that it will damage the painting surface. Once you have your stencil placed on your surface, you start filling the spaces with all kinds of colours!

I chose to do a couple flowers with a dragonfly, while my sister opted for birds. I used mainly acrylic paint for the base, then topped it off with some fabric pains for the accent touches. My sister also worked in acrylic, but used my watercolour sprays to really pull all of her colours together. The final effect was wicked!

Wimg_4970e first thought that we should let the paint dry before pulling off the stencil. Luckily both of us corrected ourselves before the paint was fully dry. For those who don’t use acrylic paints, they dry as a plastic, and they can’t be revived like a watercolour can. They are plastic forever haha. So pulling the stencils off when it was fully dry would have pulled all of the paint off of the main surface. Unfortunately, this did happen to a few of my flower petals, but it worked out as a nice design element, so we’re ok. This is just a good reminder for next time.

I am so happy with how these came out, especially considering this was a full on experiment the whole time. It’s fun to try a few new techniques and to get your hands dirty. I am at my most me when my hands are covered in paint. I can’t wait to give it a try again.

Update for July

Update for July

July has been a little busier than June was. It’s been really hot here, so my evenings have mostly been spent sitting still to keep cool. This left a lot time for knitting, painting, and reading.

I have been doing quite a bit of reading lately. I have been feeding my thirsty mind with lots of information on the topics of the day/week/century. There isn’t a lot of light reading in here, but reading I am enjoying and feel is important for me to do. Here are a few of the books that have flown off the shelf this month. I recommend each one of these. The stories told here completely opened my mind to areas I knew nothing about, and almost more importantly areas that I thought I knew lots about, showing me where there was so much more room for expansion.

I have also been participating in a Mystery Knit-A-Long with a pattern by Very Busy Monkey. I won’t show pictures just yet because the last clue just came out a couple days ago and no one hates spoilers more than I do.

Other than that I have been putting a lot of effort into making sure that I am keeping myself in check. Making sure that I am still doing ok with the world of 2020. The verdict is that I am still doing just fine. I’ve been getting in a little more journal time and going on a lot of walks and doing yoga. These things are really helpful to keep my head clear, keep me focused and centered on what I need for me. I am really learning a lot more about myself, a topic I also thought I was well versed in hehe.

I hope you’re all staying safe and doing well!

A Slow June

A Slow June

img_4637

Hey everyone,

June has been a little more low key for me. There were a few days where the 2020 drama caught up with me for a bit, so I have just been going slow. Taking in my walks, my balcony, my arts and crafts, and watching a lot of Netflix series.

Another thing that has taken over my time has been reading. I have always been a big reader, but this is getting a little closer to the research side of things. I am reading everything that I can about the race issues that are still issues in 2020. It’s time that I get myself up to date. I have filled all my possible holds and loans from the library, filled my Kobo, and I am ready to go. It has been a fascinating experience for sure.

Anyway, I am still working away at lots of different projects. I am looking forward to getting some paint to canvas soon. Still lots on the go.

Sorry that this isn’t something earth shattering for you all. I just wanted to let you all know that I was still here, still working away, just doing things a little more quietly this past little while. I do have lots of plans and posts to come your way starting next week.

Happy Tuesday all!

Maytemberuary Update

Maytemberuary Update

Hey all! We still hanging in?

I am still making it through all of this social distancing alright. I have lots to keep me busy, thankfully I have work to keep me in a routine, and lots of contacts to be in touch with each day. The weather is getting nicer in my part of the world, so that’s making it tough for people to stay in. Luckily I have a lovely balcony to use, and using it I am.

This month I have continued as I have been. Working through projects, some new, some medium, some that have been waiting years for their turn. It feels really good to get some of these wrapped up and off my shoulders. I have finished a pair of socks and a test knit.  I am in the middle of getting some of my old travel journaling sorted out and I am so happy with how it is coming together. I’ve been painting some furniture and planning what is to come next. Details on all of these projects are coming soon.

I still have lots of projects that I want to get to, but taking them one at a time is better for the psyche I find. Going with what I want to work on rather than forcing the enthusiasm is much easier.

I’ve also been trying to support some local stores and artists in the province where I can. Leo & Roxy Yarn Co released a pile of new colours over the weekend, they are tough to resist. I have a few pieces from Shirley Brian Yarns that have some in the mail, ready to be all the socks! There’s a few more that have updates coming this week that I am looking forward to supporting. Everyone has been so great at adapting to this new business style.

I hope you’re all doing well and working away! I have lots to share with you still so keep coming back for a visit.

Isolation Test Knit 1

Isolation Test Knit 1

Regular readers have seen photos of this project as I make my suggestions for how to handle quarantine. Here’s a little more detail.

Just before COVID-19 isolation rules hit my area I was picked for another test knit with Ms. Ambah O’Brien. I had done a few in the past but I had taken a long break because I was always so busy. This came up just as I was returning from a trip so I thought it was a good time to try again. I saw her sample of the project on her Instagram while I was away, so I watched her Ravelry page very closely to make sure that I was ready when the call went out. And, I was picked!

That afternoon I went to my local yarn store to pick out some colours. After some quick Insta messages with my fellow knitting ladies I came up with one colour combination, plus a few extras ;).

I got started right away. Here’s how it went.

Yarn:
img_3893Leo & Roxy, you can never go wrong. I have gone into my LYS multiple times looking to buy something new and different that I haven’t tried before, and I almost always come out with more of this yarn. It is so lovely to work with, the colours are so fantastic, and the ladies are just so wonderful.

I was a little concerned with my colour choice at the start, not with the combination, just how the first set of colours were interacting. The two contrast colours were so similar that the signature Ambah stripes weren’t as clear as I thought they might be (maybe the Dew should have been a white?). I wasn’t so worried that I was going to stop, just needed to get used to the idea that it might be a different look from what I had initially invisioned. Luckily, the yarn had better plans. The yarn with the speckles (Canyon) started gradually building more and more speckles as I got closer to the lace, so it almost appears like a gradient/fade towards the bright red section. I am so happy with it!

The shock of red in the lace is everything! I have been playing around with trying to get a teal/red combo into one of my projects but it never really worked out. I saw this red, the last one in the store, and it was perfect to round out the trio. It’s not super conventional, but it also means that it goes with everything!

My biggest suggestion when picking yarn for this project is to make sure that your lace colour has a very high contrast to your stripes. A lot of the test knitters were finding the mosaic coming out a little muddy when their stripes fought with the colour of the lace. Don’t be afraid here, go bold!

Pattern:
42445a40-dd4e-4b4f-949b-d5fd7b270a4bYou can never go wrong with an Ambah pattern. Her writing style is so clear and accessible. She is able to turn simple stitches into gorgeous works of art. This pattern is no exception. I always enjoy her build up of stripes, it makes for great TV/social group knitting, and it gives that variegated yarn in your stash an opportunity to shine.

Her way of writing lace is wonderful too. As I mentioned the stitches aren’t overly complicated, but you always come out with something beautiful. Ambah patterns were my first intro to large laces sections and she does a wonderful job of taking the immediate intimidation out of it.

I obviously won’t be giving any details on the pattern itself, you can buy it here. But one thing I did try this time around, and I highly recommend, is the yarn over after the I-cord edging. She makes mention of this in her notes. It is meant to make the edging looser. First, I love the I-cord edge, so polished, so lovely, but I do fall victim to it being a little tight. So I tried adding the extra yarn over and dropping it when I came back. It’s a whole different edge now! Nice and stretchy, and I wasn’t limited by my edge when I was blocking. I’d definitely recommend giving this a try.

Overall, this is a great experience. So give it a try! You can find this pattern here, or here. And you can find all of Ambah’s patterns here or here. I am completely in love with the final result on this one and I always look forward to wearing it.

Still April…

Still April…

Hey everyone,

How are we all hanging in? We doing OK?

On my end I am doing pretty good. I think that I am one of the few people who is actually enjoying this. Obviously not the horrible virus and tragedy, that I would like to see stop. But I am enjoying the slower pacing, the guilt free time with my hobbies, and ironically heightened level of communication that I have with my friends and family. I really want to use this time to see what I am enjoying and what I would like to cleanse out of my “regular routine” when we all go “back to normal”, whatever that is.

Anyway, we’ve all had enough Corona talk. This post is all about the year of April. I feel like I have been pretty productive. I did start three large knitting projects, so I feel like I am making zero progress on that hobby, but that’s ok. I have plans for when they are done. I have been able to work on Paint-by-Numbers (through video with my sister, we were each doing one!), get some research done on my “big project” (which kind of put the axe in the big project, but now I know), did a couple puzzles, finished a few shows, did lots of yoga, and dug out the pencil crayons. Dun dun dunnnnnnn… I’ve missed my pencil crayons so much!

For May? It looks like I am still going to be at home for the majority, so the plan? More progress. How was your April? Still keeping busy?
